Regeneration Works Progress In Glengormley

Construction News Image
Regeneration works are set to progress in Glengormley with the implementation of new traffic measures.

Work on a new right turn lane on the Antrim Road at the junction of Church Way and Glenwell Road will commence on Monday 20 February.

A traffic management system will be in place for the duration of the project which will include a lane closure from the Bank of Ireland to beyond the junction. This will operate between 9.30am – 4.30pm, Monday - Friday. Some pedestrian footways will also be affected as under-ground utilities will also be upgraded.

The timing of these works will enable all available funding to be maximised and follows close engagement with the Department for Infrastructure. It is proposed that the roadworks will continue to June 2023, however access to properties will be maintained at all times.

This new right hand turn lane is just one of the many improvements planned for Glengormley as part of a full suite of projects including the £3.9 million received from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund to 'Level Up' Glengormley. This money will support the development of a new state-of-the-art office/work space hub at the old Police Station site and Farmley Road car park enhancements.

Plans are also underway for the delivery of a new environmental improvement scheme which will introduce new paving, street furniture and improved lighting, breathing new life into Glengormley.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Alderman Stephen Ross said: "While I welcome the introduction of this new right turn lane, I also recognise the disruption this will cause for several months. I would like to thank all the road users for their understanding and co-operation while this work is carried out to help alleviate the traffic congestion at this extremely busy junction. The overall regeneration programme planned for Glengormley is very impressive and will greatly improve the attractiveness of the area and increase the footfall back into the town centre."

The transformation works have already begun with the front facades almost complete of the commercial units located off Glenwell Road.
