Remedial Works At Askeaton Leisure Centre Announced

Construction News Image
Remedial works are to begin to protect Askeaton Pool and Leisure Centre in County Limerick.

Askeaton Leisure Centre's plant room, which is integral to the operations of the swimming pool, has been impacted on numerous occasions since it opened by flooding from the tidal River Deel when particular adverse weather conditions are experienced. Significant remedial works are required to protect the plant room and the leisure centre. These remedial works will require an estimated 12-month period of closure of the Leisure Centre swimming pool for health and safety reasons. During this period of closure the flood alleviation works will be scheduled and carried out. To allow for these works to be planned and carried out the date for closure of the swimming pool is scheduled for 16 March 2023.

The gym will continue to operate up to end of August 2023.

These flood protections measures are only possible due to central Government agreeing to provide grant aid of €646,659 from the Large Scale Infrastructure Fund towards the cost of the Emergency Works for the Swimming Pool Plant room at Askeaton Pool and Leisure. The board of Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC are grateful for this central Government funding support.

During the closure period the Board of Askeaton Pool and Leisure DAC will engage with the project managers, Limerick City and County Council, to ensure the plant room flood alleviation works are completed on a timely basis, plan to renew the main reception area, and use the opportunity to carry out other internal and external maintenance of the Leisure Centre to prepare it for reopening in 2024.
