The new £1 million extension has been officially opened at Rathfern Social Activity Centre in Newtownabbey.
A ceremony was held yesterday, Thursday 26 January, to unveil the new space, which has been renamed The Sovereign Complex.
The Sovereign Complex sees the floor size of the building almost double with a new reception and entrance area; youth club hall; dance studio with dedicated sprung floor; 'changing places' toilet facility; and car parking facilities along with landscaping and lighting.
Unveiling the new extension, Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman Stephen Ross said: "The new facilities are a real asset to the community and a tribute to the strong working relationship between the Council and Rathfern Community Regeneration Group Ltd. I would like to thank the Board and staff at Rathfern Community Regeneration Group and in particular the volunteers who continue to dedicate their free time to make this complex a huge success."
George Hill, Chairman for Rathfern Community Regeneration Group which manages the day-to-day running of the centre, added: "I would like to thank the Council and the Elected Members for their dedication and investment towards The Sovereign Complex. This extension has been essential to the continual development of groups and programmes which take place within the centre."
The facilities will be utilised for a wide range of activities run by the group. These include a youth club attracting 120 children, a daily playgroup, dance groups, Slimming World, Cloughfern Band, martial arts, yoga, bible club, training workshops and Junior Hill Wardens.
The Council has also undertaken environmental improvement works to the adjacent outdoor parkland space, including improved drainage to the ponds, viewing platforms and path works. The new car park also provides access to Carnmoney Hill where residents can enjoy a scenic walk.
