Sligo's Queen Maeve Square Project Set For Development

Construction News Image
The development of Sligo town's latest public space is set to begin construction next week.

Work will get underway on Monday 16 January to redevelop Stephen Street car park into a fully pedestrianised public space known as Queen Maeve Square. It is funded by Fáilte Ireland, the Urban Regeneration Development Fund and Sligo County Council.

Welcoming the commencement of the project, Councillor Michael Clarke, Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, said: "It is great to start the New Year with this hugely significant project. We have worked very hard with our partners in Fáilte Ireland to secure the funding needed and it's exciting to finally arrive at this point. This is a flagship development that will completely change the heart of Sligo, transforming it into a space that everyone can enjoy."

The development of Queen Maeve Square will greatly enhance the public realm, creating an area that will be suitable for a broad range of uses including outdoor concerts, cultural events, farmers' markets etc. It is here that visitors will gravitate to, upon arrival in the town, and is where families can spend time enjoying a unique space overlooking the Garavogue River.

While construction takes place, the area will be unavailable to vehicular traffic. A traffic management and signage system will be put in place providing directions to nearby alternative car parks, such as Connaughton Road and Abbey Street car parks, both located just minutes away.

Pedestrian access will be fully maintained throughout the project, and deliveries to businesses in the area will also be accommodated. New disabled bays have been provided nearby on Stephen Street.

With works commencing next week, it is expected that Queen Maeve Square will be completed in 2024.
