Crews Expected On Site For Lunniagh Water Main Replacements

Construction News Image
Irish Water is moving forward with key water main replacement works in the County Donegal townland of Lunniagh.

The utility is expected to replace 850 metres of water main along a stretch of the local road, the L5363, by the end of 2022.

As part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme, Irish Water has reduced leaks nationally from 46% in 2018 to 38% last year and this work will help achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.

"We know the inconvenience bursts and unplanned interruptions have on homes and businesses and by replacing old water mains like these in Lunniagh, we are reducing the possibility of disruptions to the community's supply," explained Irish Water's Networks Regional Lead Declan Cawley.

"These works also reduce the amount of treated water being lost underground and save a valuable resource."

A road closure on the L5363 from the junction with the R257 and the L5373 is required for the duration of the works but locals can be assured that emergency and local traffic will be maintained at all times.

Some short-term interruptions to the water supply may also be required, but a minimum of 48 hours' notice will be given prior to any planned outages.

Declan added: "On behalf of Irish Water, I'd like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and cooperation as the project progresses. The long-term benefits will outweigh any short-term inconvenience."
