Construction News Image
The search has got underway to find a developer to take forward major regeneration in the Irish Street area of Downpatrick.

A tender process has been launched to redevelop a major site in the area, which includes the former Police Station building, adjacent buildings and the Irish Street car park.

The aim of the scheme is to create an innovative and inclusive place of the highest urban design quality.

Developers and other interested parties are asked to submit design and build proposals for the regeneration this key strategic site.

Launching the tender process, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said: "This exciting project is a great example of central and local government working with partners to transform this strategically important site, and to deliver a wide range of social and economic benefits for the town.

"It will see the much needed regeneration of vacant buildings in Irish Street and breathe life and vitality back into the heart of the town, creating much needed jobs, commercial activity and homes. With the tendering process now open, I look forward to seeing exciting and innovative development proposals coming forward over the next few months."

Speaking at the Downpatrick launch event, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage added: "Newry Mourne and Down District Council staff have been working closely with the Department for Communities to bring forward this project. The launch of the Development Brief for the former PSNI station in Downpatrick is very welcome and is an exciting opportunity for this area. The site is strategically located in the centre of Downpatrick and will see the old PSNI station, adjacent buildings and Irish Street car park transformed. This new scheme will demonstrate urban designs and will contribute to the social, community and economic renewal of the local area."

The deadline for proposals is 3pm on 17 February 2023.

Following the development brief the Department will appoint a developer and agree the contractual Development Agreement.
