L'Derry Forest Boosted With New Play Area

Construction News Image
Iniscarn Forest in County L'Derry has been improved with a brand new outdoor play area.

DAERA Minister Edwin Poots was joined by Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Córa Corry to officially launch the new facility.

Work has been completed by contractor Campbell Civils on the installation of a new picnic area, on site interpretation and a new all-ability play area. The improvements have also included the upgrade of the existing parking area which has created space for 22 vehicles.

Welcoming the improvements, Councillor Corry said: "Iniscarn Forest is a hidden gem within the Sperrins which throughout the pandemic has proved to be more and more popular with families seeking to participate in outdoor recreation. Council is committed to offering quality parks and increased access to children's play and outdoor recreational opportunities and experiences to our local community."

DAERA Minister, Edwin Poots commented: "This Iniscarn Forest project is an excellent example of what has been achieved through partnership working between Mid-Ulster Council, Forest Service and Rural Affairs Divisions. Effective partnership arrangements have been critical to providing these new facilities for people to enjoy. I warmly congratulate the Council on their endeavours in providing better services and facilities for users of Iniscarn Forest.

"The ongoing Forest Park Enhancement and Community Trails Development Scheme fits very well with my Department's Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation Framework priorities in that it addresses important issues such as isolation, loneliness, access and health and well-being. Completion of the Iniscarn project provides local people and visitors to the area with readily accessible opportunities to enjoy the outdoor environment and improve their health and well-being."

The £210,000 project was brought to life as part of the Council's Five Year Parks and Play Strategy. It was funded through the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation (TRPSI) Programme and by Mid Ulster District Council.
