Necarne Castle Stabilisation Works Recognised For Excellence

The stabilisation of Necarne Castle on the Necarne estate has been celebrated with a nomination at the prestigious Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) awards.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has been shortlisted in the Heritage category for its work on Necarne Castle.

The UK Regional winners will be announced on Wednesday 18 May 2022 with the grand final taking place in London in October.

The RICS awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure and recognise outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies.

Speaking about the nomination, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Errol Thompson said: "Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to working in partnership with other stakeholders to preserve the stunning natural and built environment in our district for future generations and to ensure that it is sustainably managed and enhanced.

"The goal of the work was to prevent the imminent collapse of the historic castle and enable a long term strategy to be put in place for its restoration and I am delighted and honoured that the Council's work has been recognised in such a respected and influential awards scheme.

"The Necarne project is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and our partnership with Mann Williams Engineers, Consarc Architects and McCusker Contracts has delivered a result which has exceeded expectations."

Necarne Castle is a unique and historic structure dating back to the 17th century and is currently in the custodianship of the Council. It has, over the past six months, benefitted from substantial stabilisation and conservation works.

With the essential stabilisation works nearing completion, the Council is currently scoping the next phase of developments and is actively exploring options for bringing elements of the castle into use to include public access.
