New Active Travel Facilities Improve Accessibility At UCD

A new road and cycle scheme has reached completion near University College Dublin to encourage active travel in the area.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has joined forces with UCD for the programme, which provides improved accessibility to the campus.

With investment from the National Transport Authority, the works included a new entrance to UCD campus, new two-way cycle track from Foster's Ave to UCD Footbridge, as well as modifications to bus stops. Further work included upgrades of Stillorgan Rd/ Foster's Ave Junction with new pedestrian/ cycle crossing of the dual carriageway and Stillorgan Rd/ The Rise junction with dedicated cycle lane facilities and upgrade of traffic signals.


Speaking at the opening, the Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Cllr Lettie McCarthy said: "I am delighted to open this scheme. The Stillorgan Road (UCD Access) Cycle Improvement Scheme will encourage, and make it safer for our citizens, and particularly the students of UCD, to walk and cycle. This scheme further highlights Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown's commitment to promoting Active Travel across the County."

Minister Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport, added: "This scheme is an example of the many small interventions we can take across our cities, towns and villages to improve the accessibility of cycling as a mode of transportation. The Department for Transport has made available millions of euro to local authorities to develop these upgrades to our walking and cycling infrastructure and I look forward to seeing more and more being completed in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown."
