A programme of water network improvements has been completed in the popular County Donegal town of Letterkenny.
Following on from a recent upgrade of treatment facilities at the local water treatment plant, these works directly boost the water network.
Irish Water worked in partnership with Donegal County Council to complete the connection of Pollan Water Supply Scheme and the Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme via a 14km trunk watermain, as well as the provision of three pumping stations at Dunduffsford, Miltown and Bohullion. This project has facilitated over 10% increase in water supply to the Letterkenny region and ensures security of supply to local homes and businesses. The construction of approximately 11km of new trunk watermains will also provide increased water availability and resilience to the Millford and Rathmullen areas.
Irish Water's John McElwaine said: "The importance of providing the Pollan trunk watermain link from Manorcunningham to Carnamuggah Reservoir in Letterkenny cannot be underestimated. These works will significantly improve the provision of safe and secure drinking water supply and will also ensure that current and future demand can be achieved in the town as it continues to grow.
"The works also included the provision of 6km of pipeline between Cranford and Milford, a 5km pipeline between Creavery and Rathmullan, the construction of new pumping stations at Bohullion and Dunduffsfort, as well as a major upgrade to the existing pumping station at Milltown. This overall investment will ensure the provision of an improved water supply to homes and businesses in the area now and into the future.
"We would like to thank the public for the patience during the traffic restrictions on the dual carriageway into Letterkenny whilst construction was being carried out.
"We would also like to thank Nicholas O Dwyer and MEIC contractors for delivering the works on Irish Water's behalf."
