New proposals have been put forward to increase the affordable housing options in Northern Ireland, including the introduction of Intermediate Rent.
Intermediate Rent, an affordable housing model, offers tenants the chance to rent a new or refurbished home at a price less than the market rate.
Launching a consultation on the new proposals, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said: "Access to housing is a fundamental right. We need to look at all options to ensure that everyone has access to a good quality, affordable home.
"As part of my ambitious housing reform programme, I am investing significantly in the social housing new build programme, I have directed more funding to affordable housing through Co-Ownership and introduced a Bill through the Assembly to improve protections in the private rented sector. I am now looking to extend the affordable housing options available to people.
"It is time we provided a wider choice to those who cannot or do not wish to buy a home.
"Intermediate rent could deliver more choice and reduce demands on other areas of our housing system.
"Intermediate Rent offers affordable, good quality, secure and well maintained and managed homes, with support services where they are needed."
The consultation will run from Monday 18 October 2021 – Friday 14 January 2022.
Minister Hargey added: "I am now seeking the views of all interested parties to help inform the development and delivery of this new supply of homes for rent."
