Komatsu Unveils New Boom Change System

Construction News Image
Komatsu has announced details of a new K100 boom change system for its PC490HRD-11 excavator, enabling operators to change machine configuration in minutes from inside the cab.

With six different working configurations, the PC490HRD-11 is equipped to handle a range of demolition attachments, from 2500 kg in the maximum 32 m extended high reach arrangement, up to 3350 kg in the common 28 m high reach arrangement and up to 5000 kg for digging or medium height arrangements.

The introduction of the K100 system removes the need to manually handle heavy hydraulic hoses or carry out manual work at height when changing the machine’s configuration. In addition, it enables the PC490HRD-11 to carry out both primary demolition and site clearance. Operating weight ranges from 62105 kg up to 75830 kg, depending on its configuration.

Inside, an excavator cab equipped with the K100 system looks similar to that of the conventional boom change unit. All system controls are incorporated within the Human/Machine Interface (HMI) panel, which doubles up as the working range indicator system in normal use. In addition, the panel provides a built-in view from the alignment camera, briefing the operator on the machine’s condition without the need for additional monitors.

Standard safety and fleet management equipment fitted to the PC490HRD-11 are retained with the K100 system. Neutral Detection System, Komatsu Care, KomVision and Komatsu’s telematic system Komtrax all feature in the standard specification.

Welcoming the K100's introduction, which he says will "result in a significant improvement in efficiency for demolition contractors", John O’Brien, director at Komatsu distributor in Ireland, McHale Plant Sales, believes customers "will benefit from the versatility of a Komatsu HRD machine, now coupled with enhanced site safety and reduced project time".
