Emergency Motion Put Forward To Protect Historical Value Of Moore Street

Construction News Image
The Green Party has brought an emergency motion to protect the heritage and unique historical and cultural value of Moore Street in Dublin in any future city development plans.

The motion has been initiated by Green Councillor Donna Cooney, who is also Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Forum on Moore Street, and has secured cross-party support from thirty-eight councillors to date including the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Hazel Chu. Cllr Cooney, a relative of Elizabeth O'Farrell, has been a long time campaigner for the protection and sensitive restoration of the Historical Moore Street heritage and market area said,

"The Dublin City Development Plan has recently been updated to include North Great George’s Street and already includes O'Connell Street as Architectural Conservation Areas, yet unbelievably Moore Street with its unique history has not been included. I was delighted to get overwhelming support for this emergency motion. It follows through on the recently launched Green Party Vision for Moore Street."

The Green Party's Vision for Moore Street calls for an Architectural Conservation Area to be prepared for Moore Street and its surroundings, and for mixed-use new development that is in sympathy with the area's history and heritage. Moore Street and its immediate surroundings have suffered from decades of neglect. There is now an extraordinary opportunity to commemorate the past and permit development in sympathy with its surroundings.

"This is an area steeped in history that includes one of the oldest surviving Dublin street traders markets. One week after the 105th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, let us honour those who died, fought and spent their last days on Moore Street by supporting the inclusion of Moore Street as an Architectural Conservation Area."
