Ballina town centre in Co Mayo is set to undergo a series of improvements worth an estimated €10 million.
This redevelopment project will see the existing Tesco store undergo a complete makeover and expansion, while a new car park will be created in back lands acquired by Mayo County Council with a new street linking Market Sq. and Pearse Street.
Further works will include a major new commercial and residential block which will be the subject of a design and develop competition.
This project will dovetail with the ongoing work on the Military Barracks Innovation Hub and will allow for a major upgrade of the public realm in the Market square.
Welcoming the announcement, Chairman of the Ballina Municipal District, Cllr Michael Loftus said: "This is a big boost to the town of Ballina, and it will certainly play an exciting role in the redevelopment of a key area in the centre of our town."
Peter Hynes, Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, added: "A lot of hard work and discussion has gone into the store upgrade and the regeneration of Market Square and it is great to see the plans move to the next stage. Taken together with the work underway on the Mary Robinson Centre the future for Ballina looks very bright."
