Cork Airport Strikes Green Deal With Electric Ireland

Construction News Image
Cork Airport is set to move towards 100% green electricity after agreeing a deal with Electric Ireland.

The national body will supply 8 million kwh of green electricity per annum to Cork Airport under the agreement.

This switch to 100% green electricity forms part of Cork Airport's sustainability strategy and Carbon Management Plan, and its push to grow its business in a sustainable manner.

While passenger numbers are expected to increase by over 8% this year, Cork Airport remains on course to continuously reduce energy consumption year on year since 2009.

Dermot McArdle, Head of Business Markets for Electric Ireland, said: "We are committed to assisting businesses in meeting their sustainability objectives through significant changes to 100% green electricity. As Ireland's leading electricity, gas and energy supplier to large energy users, Electric Ireland has proven experience in helping users such as Cork Airport. Our competitive pricing has also allowed Cork Airport to easily make this switch."

Bill Daly, Head of Asset Care, at Cork Airport added: "This commitment to switch to 100% green electricity forms part of Cork Airports overall sustainability strategy. Cork Airport has previously won the SEAI Public Sector Sustainable Energy Award and we are currently achieving an annual energy consumption reduction of 48% from a 2006-2009 baseline, independently validated through the SEAI Monitoring and Reporting Programme. We are fully committed to developing environmental standards in all areas of our business in order to ensure a safe and efficient airport facility. Switching to 100% green energy is a further endorsement of our sustainability agenda at Cork Airport."

This contract was negotiated through Energy Services Limited based in Cork, daa procurement and Cork Airport Management.
