Consultations Shape Ulster Canal Greenway Plans

Construction News Image
A number of consultation events have taken place to help shape plans for the Ulster Canal Greenway.

Locals came out in Middletown, Smithborough and Tyholland to offer views and suggestions on the proposed route options for the project.

Chairman of Monaghan County Council, Councillor Seamus Coyle said: "The display of proposed route options is a significant development of the Ulster Canal Greenway project. Greenways have become increasingly popular in recent years, people are now much more conscious of the benefits of healthy living and outdoor leisure activities more so with the cross-border emphasis bringing communities together. I am confident that the Ulster Canal Greenway will be a success and bring a much-needed economic boost to the Border Region opening up great opportunities for small businesses along the route. The support shown at the three public consultation events have shown the overwhelming support for this project and I look forward to working closely with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and the other project partners to bring this project to fruition."

Funded through the European Union's INTERREG VA Programme, this €4.95m project will promote cross-border relations.

Chairperson of Middletown Community Forum Ciara Connelly commented: "We are excited to receive the proposed route options. This phase of the Ulster Canal Greenway project will build upon Middletown's unique location as a gateway and an important recreational link to the greenways of Monaghan. It will revive the town making it a prime destination to visit, invest and live. We would like to thank statutory agencies for providing us with this opportunity and we look forward to future involvement."

Feedback can be given on the proposed route options until Thursday 10 October.
