The project will involve replacing 500 metres of old cast iron water mains with plastic pipes along Dean Street and onto Black Mill Street.
New water service connections will also be installed as part of the work.
Speaking about the works, Mark O'Duffy, Network Programme Lead for Irish Water said: "We would like to thank the local community and local businesses for their patience and understanding while these essential works take place. These works will benefit homes and businesses in Kilkenny city and will ensure the future safety and secure supply of water for the area. We would also like to thank Kilkenny County Council and our contracting partners Coffey Northumbrian Ltd (CNL) for their support and collaboration on this project."

These works are a continuation of the work already completed in Patrick Street in 2018.
When complete, they will ensure a safer and more secure water supply for the city under Irish Water's national Leakage Reduction Programme.
The project is expected to be complete by May 2019.
