A new Health & Wellbeing Centre has been opened in Loughgiel, Co Antrim, within the existing Millennium Centre.
Loughgiel Community Association completed the project with £180,000 from Causeway Coast and Glens Local Action Group (LAG) and an additional £48,000 from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council's capital budget.
The new facilities include include a spin studio and a walking path and will provide services including holistic therapies, fitness classes and social activities.
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Brenda Chivers, who is also a member of the LAG Board, said: "Loughgiel Community Association has shown great vision with the development of this state of the art HLC.
"The Centre will provide a range of healthy living activities aimed at enhancing the physical and mental wellbeing of the entire community. Over the past 30 years, the Association has consistently demonstrated a progressive approach and in that time members have created a superb community space. The group is a model of good practice and a fine example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and a commitment to improve the lives of those in the area."
Manager of Loughgiel Community Association Angela O'Hagan added: "I would like to state on behalf of Loughgiel Community Association that we are very appreciative and delighted to have received funding through the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 and Causeway Coast and Glens Local Action Group. The programme has been a huge success for people living in rural areas. The community of Loughgiel and surrounding areas are thoroughly enjoying the provision of additional space and access to basic services and has already shown improvements on issues around Health & Wellbeing. The walking path provides a safe environment and is accessible for all abilities and ages. We are excited that Loughgiel's Health & Wellbeing project will 'inject a spark' and create a more vibrant community, and will compliment the strong foundations which we have already cemented in the community."
