Work Progresses On Pipe Replacements In Cork City

Construction News Image
Coffey Northumbrian is progressing work on a water mains replacement project in the Turner's Cross area of Cork City.

The scheme will involve replacing 4.8km of problematic water mains with new plastic pipes.

It will be carried out across two stages, with the first stage commencing today, Monday 03 December, on O'Connell Avenue, moving to Friars Road, Congress Road and Derrynane Road.

Following a christmas break, work will continue in 2019 when ageing mains will be replaced in the Beaufort Park, Doyle Road, Evergreen Road, Father Mathew Road, Hollyville, Mercier Park, Murphy's Gardens, O'Connell Avenue, O'Connell Crescent, St. Anne's Park, St. Patrick's Road and Mountpleasant Avenue areas.

The project is expected to be complete by July 2019.

It is being delivered as part of Irish Water's national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Steven Blennerhassett, Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead, Irish Water, said: "As they get older, cast iron water mains can become severely corroded and have a high level of leakage as well as being subject to frequent bursts, which in turn leads to water discolouration. At present, almost half of the water produced in Ireland is lost to leaks in the network.

"Replacing these ageing water mains will not only reduce the high levels of leakage, but it will also improve security of water supply, as well as improving the quality of the water.

"We would like to thank local residents and businesses for their ongoing cooperation as we work together to deliver these improvements for Turner's Cross; and Cork City Council for their continuing efforts in delivering this programme of works."
