Approximately 1,400 metres of mains, which is prone to frequent bursts, will be decommissioned and replaced with heavy plastic pipes.
New water service connections will also be delivered as part of the scheme.
The project supports Irish Water's €500 million National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Commenting on the works, Georgina O'Reilly said: "The replacement of these ageing water mains in Ballylynan will improve security of supply for local residents and businesses alike. Replacing the existing water mains with new modern pipes will provide a long-term solution to ensure a safe and secure water supply is delivered to customers. Irish Water understands this type of work can be inconvenient and will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause."
Traffic management will be in place during sections of the works.
The works are expected to be completed by January 2019.
