Coffey Northumbrian To Replace Water Mains In Co Carlow

Construction News Image
Coffey Northumbrian is to begin work to replace water mains in Graiguecullen, Co Carlow.

The project involves replacing over 4km of old cast iron back yard water mains and constructing 2.5km of new water mains along the public road.

The old, damaged pipes will be replaced with heavy plastic pipes.

Works starting this week will replace 700m of back yard cast iron water mains in the Maryborough Street, Chapel Street, Church Street, The Numbers and Henry Street areas.

They are being completed under Irish Water's Leakage Reduction Programme, which will continue in Graiguecullen later this year and into 2019.

"As they get older, cast iron water mains can become severely corroded and have a high level of leakage as well as being subject to frequent bursts, which in turn leads to water discolouration. At present, it is estimated that some three-quarters of the water supplied to Graiguecullen is lost to leaks in the network," said Mark O'Duffy, Network Programme Regional Lead at Irish Water.

"We would like to thank local residents and businesses for attending our Information Evening in August and for their ongoing cooperation as we work together to deliver these improvements for Graiguecullen; and Carlow County Council for their continuing efforts in delivering this challenging programme of works."

The scheme is being carried out on behalf of Irish Water and in partnership with Carlow County Council.
