"We are committed to reducing the amount of treated water lost to leakage in Cork. Much of the water main network across the city and county is very old and in poor condition, with some cast iron pipes in the ground for over a century. This means that a large amount of treated water is simply leaking into the ground," said Steven Blennerhassett of Irish Water.
"By replacing these old pipes we can reduce leakage, prevent disruption due to burst pipes and ensure a more reliable and secure water supply for local residents and businesses. We will also be replacing old service pipes between the water mains in the public road and the boundaries of customers' properties. Where the existing service connections on the public side are made from lead these will be replaced as part of this improvement work."

Approximately 2.5km of water pipes are to be replaced in Cork City as part of Irish Water's National Leakage Reduction Programme. The work is being carried in the Lower Glanmire Road area.
As part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme, 1.3km of old water mains will also be replaced between the junction with Ship Street and the junction with Water Street. This work will be on site until the end of November, stop for December in order to avoiding disruption during the busy Christmas period, and then recommence in January until March.
In addition to this, a new trunk main is being laid along the Lower Glanmire Road between Millennium Gardens and Water Street. This is part of the Eastern Strategic Link which will ensure a more secure supply for the city by providing the capacity to re-route supply from other areas in the event of a large burst or other unplanned incident. This element of the work is due to be finished by the end of November. Construction works will largely take place at night in order to minimise disruption to traffic but may include 24-hour working during the mid-term break in order to ensure completion before the end of November.
Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works in each area. These works are being carried out ahead of planned road resurfacing works on the Lower Glanmire Road.
