Coffey Northumbrian is to replace 3.6 kilometres of water mains in Graiguecullen, Co Carlow, to improve the supply for local customers.
Around 2.5km of HDPE plastic pipes will be constructed to replace the old cast iron mains and new service connections will be installed from the new water main to each customer's property.
The new mains will provide security of supply, improve water quality and reduce high leakage levels in the area.
The communities to benefit from these improvement works are: Governey Park, Maher Road, Staunton Avenue, Whitney Place, St Clare's Road, Croppy Place, Colclough Avenue, Derrig Avenue, St Fiacc's Terrace, Sleaty Street, Pearse Road, Duggan Avenue and Pacelli Avenue.
The works also involve decommissioning of a further 700 metres of old cast iron back yard mains. New water mains have already been constructed along the public road in these areas therefore works only require new service connections to be installed from the new water main to each customer's property. The communities to benefit from these improvement works are: Maryborough Street, Chapel Street, Church Street, The Numbers, Henry Street.
Speaking at the event about the benefits of the works, Irish Water's Leakage Reduction Programme Lead for Carlow Mark O'Duffy said: "This is a significant investment in water services in Graigucullen. The benefits of the works are quite significant, customers will experience a more reliable water supply - replacing the old water mains with new water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers in the area. The works will also reduce leaks – replacement of old water mains and service connections in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground. This will also mean improved water quality – removing existing old cast iron and lead from the water network and replacing them with new plastic pipes will reduce the risk of contamination. In addition, these works will deliver cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future."
The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water shut offs. Traffic management may be in place where water mains are being constructed.
