Wexford Council Announces New Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme

A new €45 million Enniscorthy Flood Defence scheme has been unveiled by Wexford County Council.

The project has been developed by design consultants Mott McDonald and Roughan & O'Donovan. Amendments have been made to the scheme since its public consultation in 2009 and public display in 2012.

It covers a 3.5km stretch of the River Slaney, extending from 1.5km upstream of Enniscorthy Bridge to 2km downstream. 

The main elements of the project include:

• River channel widening and deepening. 


• Flood defense walls, including glass panel walls in the town centre.


• Removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge & the construction of a new road bridge 500m downstream, just south of the Riverside Park Hotel.


• A new pedestrian bridge in the town centre.

• New road junction layouts and traffic management plan for the town centre.


• Bridge foundation protection works for the Railway Bridge & the Old Enniscorthy Bridge.


• Services diversions & additional Stormwater Pumping Stations.

The scheme will go to public exhibition later this year. Following the public exhibition process, it will go to the Minister for Public Expenditure & Reform for confirmation.

Public information events are to be held in the coming weeks.

If confirmed, construction will commence on the scheme in 2019 and will be completed in three years.
