Concerns have been raised over the effect of Carillion's collapse on planned school projects across Ireland.
Last week, Kildare-based contractor Sammon Group entered into protected receivership as a result of Carillion's failure, with a reported €8 million owed to the company by the now-defunct industry services firm.
Sammon Group had been subcontracted by Carillion to build new schools in Carlow, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow, with work on these projects now halted as a result of Carillion's collapse.
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education and Skills, Thomas Byrne TD, has now called for a meeting with Minister Richard Bruton to discuss the company's collapse and its impact on school building projects in Ireland.
Deputy Byrne said the new schools are urgently needed as many pupils and teachers are currently forced to stay in "substandard" accommodation, which lacks basic educational facilities.
"Now they face the prospect of having to stay in prefabricated classrooms for an extended period of time," he said.
"I have requested a meeting with Minister Bruton and his officials to discuss the Government response to this issue and determine what steps need to be taken to ensure there are no unnecessary delays in getting these school building projects completed.
"There are also serious concerns regarding the position of sub-contractors. There are fears for the future of these sub-contractors as their cash flow has in many cases essentially come to a halt. This could further delay the school building programmes and jobs could be on the line. Every effort needs to be taken to avoid any unnecessary disruption.
"Parents and teachers in the affected areas are concerned about the lack of information regarding the current position of these school building projects. Minister Bruton needs to set out a detailed plan to ensure these schools open as soon as possible," concluded Deputy Byrne."
