Brexit: UK Construction Industry Facing 'Cliff Edge'

Construction News Image
Sinn Fein has called for designated special status for NI after it was revealed the negative impact Brexit will have on the availability of skills for the construction industry.

The Construction Industry Brexit Manifesto highlighted the shortage of skilled workers within the industry and concerns have been raised over the ability to recruit overseas workers post Brexit.

Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said: "A survey published in October by the Federation of Master Builders also showed that three out of five small to medium sized construction businesses are already having difficulties recruiting staff including carpenters, joiners and bricklayers so this is a problem that will only be exacerbated by Brexit.

"Construction businesses in the north have also previously warned of the implications of a border being imposed as most construction businesses transport materials, products and labour north south on a regular basis.

"The only way to avoid these negative impacts for the construction industry and all other sectors is to ensure designated special status for the north."

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said: "The construction industry has been criticised in the past for being too disparate but it has come together here with one voice and set of clear messages. We know we need to step up as an industry and train more home-grown talent but we also have to be realistic about the future. There will continue to be some ongoing need for migrant workers and our post-Brexit migration rules will need to be fit for purpose."
