Govt Accused Of 'Doing Nothing' To Tackle Climate Change

Construction News Image
The Green Party has accused the government of "doing nothing" to tackle climate change in Ireland.

Leader Eamon Ryan TD hit out after it was revealed that Ireland ranked the worst performing European country in relation to climate change.

The analysis was carried out by Germanwatch and the NewClimate Institute.

Mr Ryan said: "The Government is doing nothing to lead this country to the new clean industrial revolution that is taking hold across the world. We are going to miss our 2020 emissions reductions targets be a country mile and the Government is doing nothing to reverse that reality.

"We have some of the best renewable energy resources in the world but Minister Denis Naughten has no ambition to increase the percentage of clean power we use between now and 2030. The Government are holding to a 40% renewables integration target by that time when with real political leadership we could hit a 75% target.

"The new national planning framework said we need to cut emissions and stop the sprawl but has no real plans for promoting sustainable transport modes and more concentrated development. Minister Ross seems to be asleep at the wheel.

"The citizens assembly promoted a rational plan to convert Irish agriculture to a more profitable and less polluting model but Minister Creed seems to just push an 'Origin Green' brand which is now deeply damaged by today's ranking for Ireland.'

"We are shamed today internationally. It is long past time for a radical change in direction before it is too late to restore our good name."
