Irish Water To Invest €190,000 To Replace Water Main In Sligo

Construction News Image
Irish Water is to invest €190,000 to replace a section of water main that has been causing deteriorations in water quality in Co Sligo.

The project in Calry involves the replacement of over 1.9km of water main, which was laid in the 1960s and represents the removal of the last remaining section of cast iron water main in the area.

Phase one of the works have commenced and involves site investigation works with stage two, the water main pipe laying works due to follow. The works are due to be complete in approximately five months.

Pauric Martin from Irish Water's Asset Delivery team said: "The existing two inch cast iron main was laid in 1960 and has had on-going water quality issues and complaints over the past number of years, particularly towards the extremity of the line. Low chlorine residual levels are a constant problem despite efforts to alleviate this problem, including regular flushing of the mains. It is important that chlorine levels are maintained at a constant level throughout the network and this new section of pipe will ensure that.

"The replacement of this 1.9km section of water main by McGovern Plant Hire on behalf of Irish Water, is crucial to improving water quality and will remove the last remaining section of cast iron water main in the area."
