Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth welcomed the funding and called for it to be invested in monitoring and surveillance of litter blackspots.

She said: "I am pleased that Minister Naughten has realised the extent of the problem facing our towns, villages, rivers, lakes and scenic areas when it comes to illegal dumping. These acts of vandalism result have health, environmental and economic implications for communities and unfortunately the situation has deteriorated over the last few years.
"I hope Cavan and Monaghan County Councils will use this funding to tackle this scourge, clean up our beauty spots and restore pride in our local community areas."
