Two Waste Management Firms Fined For Waste Offences

Two waste management firms based in Omagh have been fined for a number of waste offences.

Recyco Ltd and Shergrim Recycling Ltd pleaded guilty at a previous hearing and were fined a total of £5,250.

Officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) visited a site at 89 Barony Road, Mountfield, on 27 October 2011, where they uncovered significant quantities of buried waste. The waste consisted of construction and demolition waste – clay, concrete, brick, timber and metals – together with other wastes associated with waste processing facilities, such as macerated timber, crushed glass, textiles and other residuals. Some of the waste was found at a depth of 9.5 metres.


Both companies had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing in December 2015 and at the direction of the court, undertook to remediate the site. This involved the excavation, treatment and removal of over 31,500 tonnes of waste from the site and disposal of this waste at an authorised landfill facility. The remediation works, overseen by the NIEA, were completed in December 2016 at an estimated cost of £800,000.

Shergrim Recycling Ltd were instructed to pay costs to the NIEA of £7,370.06.
