GMC Utilities To Begin Work On Watermains Rehabilitation Project

GMC Utilities is to begin work on a watermains rehabilitation project in Co Monaghan.

Irish Water is investing €5.5million in the project which will improve water quality for consumers in Monaghan town and Clones.

The investment includes the replacement and rehabilitation of 9.1 km of ageing watermains in the Monaghan Town (4.8km) and Clones (4.3km) areas.

The project also includes the replacement of 430 customer service connections and 134 common backyard services as well as the removal of any lead pipework encountered on the public-side of the water distribution network.


The total amount of water which will be saved as a result of the replacement of old watermains that are prone to leakage and regular bursts and which cause interruptions to supply is estimated at 54 million litres of water per year.

The work is expected to take around 18 months to complete.

Irish Water's Regional Information Specialist, Sean Corrigan, said: "Short-term water shut offs for a number of hours over a day or two in each area will be required where pipes are being connected to the system. The project team will ensure that householders and businesses are advised of any works in their area in advance.

"Residents and business owners will already have received correspondence regarding the works and more letters will be delivered as the project progresses. A letter will be issued giving at least two weeks’ notification before the works commence. Anyone with queries can contact the project team during office hours on 1890 252261."
