Residents in Mayo are benefitting from an investment in Ireland's water services, according to Fine Gael.

Mayo Senator Michelle Mulherin said the people in Mayo now have cleaner and healthier water supplies.

She said: "The Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA) recently published an update on the Remedial Action List showing where works are progressing in Co Mayo for the benefit of over 45,000 people whose water supplies are on the list.

"For example, the Bonniconlon Water Supply, which was on the Remedial Action List for elevated levels of chemicals called THMs, has now been removed from the list. Irish Water has confirmed that this supply has now been decommissioned and replaced with the Ballina-Lisglennon scheme with works to be completed in mid-2017.

"Irish Water is also continuing to work on the four schemes in Mayo which are on the Remedial Action List to ensure high quality reliable drinking water for over 45,000 people.

"Works on the the Ballina-Lisglennon water treatment plant are scheduled to be complete mid-2017, and the three other Mayo water supplies on the list are undergoing specific work such as improvements to operations in Kiltimagh, upgrading of the treatment plant in Iniskturk and an upgrade of the Lough Mask water treatment plant to increase capacity."
