Concerns Raised Over Plans For New Stadium At Casement Park

Construction News Image
Residents and businesses have raised concerns over the plans for a new stadium at Casement Park in west Belfast.

SDLP MLA Alex Attwood said he would "fully interrogate" the new proposals after changes were made to the original design.

Mr Attwood said: "The SDLP will be using our influence to get the best possible outcome for all concerned.

"Things are different now from the time of the first planning application. The High Court has spoken-the issues identified at that time must be addressed and be seen to be addressed. Local residents and people have shown good authority-they must be respected and listened to. The continuing state economic underinvestment in west Belfast, more and more evident, means projects to regenerate the constituency are needed.

"Central to the next phase of the consultation is listening to and hearing the views of local residents, people, businesses and other stakeholders. In doing so there are a number of key questions."

Sinn Féin West Belfast MP Paul Maskey welcomed the proposals and said it is an exciting time for the GAA.

Mr Maskey said: "There will be more opportunities for residents, businesses, GAA supporters and all those who have an interest in Casement Park to have their voices heard.

"I would urge everyone who has an interest to take the opportunities to discuss these proposals with the development team on the dates set out.

"I have no doubt that a new Casement Park will help the continued regeneration of west Belfast and with £25m already secured for a new Andersonstown leisure centre will see over £100m invested in this part of west Belfast."
