Block Of Flats In Belfast To Be Demolished And Redeveloped

A block of flats near Belfast city centre are to be demolished and redeveloped.

Belfast City Council gave the green light for Durham House, owned by Helm Housing Association, to be knocked down.

Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann welcomed the decision.

Mr McCann said: "These flats became synonymous with anti-social activity. They have been a blight on the St Mary's Community for years with violent attacks, drug dealing and vandalism which left many residents in fear of their lives.


"I made several representations to Helm Housing Association on behalf of local residents and got a recent commitment that they would redevelop these flats.

"Sinn Fein had protested outside Helm about the serious problems in the flats and called on Helm to live up to its commitment on demolition and redevelopment.

"I will be seeking an early meeting with Helm to ensure the transition is smooth and those living there are speedily rehoused."
