Concerns Raised Over Runway At Dublin Airport

Construction News Image
Residents have raised concerns over the development of another runway at Dublin Airport.

Sinn Fein TD said residents are worried it may effect their quality of life and is said a consultation is needed between the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) to allay residents fears.

TD Louise O'Reilly said: "Planning permission for this was granted with strict criteria to restrict the use at night time and it has to be borne in mind that this permission was granted almost 10 years ago - the surrounding area has changed considerably in the intervening time and residents need to be consulted.

"Over the course of the election campaign I met with many people who had grave concerns for the effect a new runway or further development of Dublin Airport would have on their quality of life. They did not feel that their opinion had be sufficiently sought at that time and I do not believe at present enough has been done by DAA to hear these concerns or to allay these fears.

"We also need to make sure that an expansion of capacity can be matched by complimentary transport services to and from the airport. Traffic congestion is an increasingly serious problem around the airport and successive cuts to public transport companies like Dublin Bus have not helped."

Green Party member of Fingal County Council, Councillor David Healy, said: "We believe that this planned expansion may contravene Section 15 of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act. Dublin Airport Authority, like all other public authorities, are subject to the obligation to consider the objective of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change in the State.

"The plan for a third runway is based on predictions for passenger numbers which are incompatible with the 1.5 degree global warming target agreed in Paris. Dublin Airport Authority is simply on auto pilot and paying no regard to national and global policy to reduce emissions."
