Call For Plans To Develop Nuclear Plant To Be Abandoned

The SDLP is calling on the British Government to abandon plans to develop a nuclear plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset.

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said the plans are in "chaos" and urged the government to reinvest in renewable technologies.

She said: "More and more voices are joining the growing call for an alternative to the billions that will be pumped into the Hinkley Point plant, assisted with Chinese intervention. That money could be better used growing the renewables sector and developing clean energy alternatives to an over reliance on nuclear power.


"It's clear that the Conservative government is content to plough money into another white elephant while placing a stranglehold on investment in renewable technologies. The same government that is inflicting untold pain on hundreds of thousands of families with cuts to working tax cuts.

"The government needs to get it’s priorities right."
