NI Water Employees Forced To Stop Work After Protestors Gather In Waterford

NI Water employees have been forced to stop working on the Waterford Watermains Rehabilitation Project after protestors gathered on a site at Cannon Street.

The site had to be closed for health and safety reasons in order to protect both residents in the area and the workers on site.

The works are being carried out to secure and improve Waterford City's water supply which is essential for economic growth in the area. The current phase of the project involves a €7 million investment by Irish Water in the City’s water infrastructure with Irish Water investing approximately €40 million in water and wastewater infrastructure across Waterford City and County.


Aisling Buckley, Regional Information Officer at Irish Water said: "This project has been ongoing for the last 20 years and was initially tendered for and carried out by Waterford City Council. Previous to today there has been excellent co-operation from the local community and public representatives in Waterford City and an appreciation for the vital nature of theses works and the positive impact they will have on the City. Irish Water wishes to thank the people of Waterford for their ongoing co-operation. Irish Water hopes to be able to resume these works on Cannon Street and in Lisduggan at the earliest possible opportunity."
