DRD Called To Urgently Address Giant Hogweed Discovered In Glengormley

The Department of Regional Development (DRD) is being called to urgently address the threat posed following the discovery of Giant Hogweed in Glengormley.

The plant is known to cause severe chemical burns to those who come into contact with it.

The Giant Hogweed was discovered in the Church Road area.


SDLP Councillor Noreen McClelland said: "This is clearly a significant threat to public safety, especially given that so many children and young people pass by the area. There can be no delay in dealing with this.

"I understand that DRD has trimmed some similar plants in the area but what is needed here is treatment of the roots and affected ground so that the public can be assured that there will be no regrowth.

"I will be writing to Transport NI to request a survey of the area and thorough treatment of any infected areas as a matter of urgency."
