A "major block" on the introduction of rent control is the "self-interest of landlord TDs", according to Sinn Féin's housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis.
Deputy Ellis made the comments following the publication of the Register of Dáil members' interests, which revealed that up to 11% of TDs are landlords, with 19 declaring their occupation as 'landlord'.
"Being a landlord does not mean you automatically charge high rents or flout regulations and many landlords provide a good service. However TDs must not be above reproach when making decisions on issues affecting the people of the state and rent rates are a major issue right now. Dublin city, where many TDs rent properties, has seen rent rates soar by 34% since this government took office," Deputy Ellis said.
"Some of these TDs own just one property which they rent rather than leaving idle, but others have extensive property portfolios and make considerable money off the rent of a number of tenants. This does not inspire confidence in the public who want to see controls on rent which will make it affordable to live in comfort without fear of losing your home.
"Sinn Féin has called for rent controls for a long time now and have been met with a lot of resistance from the government. Fianna Fáil have even called for the state to pay more money to landlords. We need to bring down rates now and to have regulations which stabilise rents into the future to create a more sustainable and affordable market. This must be done in conjunction with a major public house building strategy."
