The Grafton Street Improvement Scheme is now complete.
A special event is to be held this evening, Friday 13th March, to celebrate the completion of the work outside Marks & Spencer's at 6.45pm.
The project cost approximately €4 million and saw the street's old red brick surface replaced with natural stone, new public lighting and street furniture. Dublin City Council and local businesses will mark the occasion by switching on the new street lighting tonight.
The lighting will be green this weekend to mark the St. Patrick's Festival. This will showcase a new public lighting feature which allows the council to change the colour of street lights on Grafton Street to mark special occasions.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke will perform the ceremonial switching on of the new street lights. He said: "I, and Dublin City Council, would like to thank the businesses and the many people who visit Grafton Street for their cooperation and patience during the improvement works. Following these works Grafton Street is now an even bigger draw for shoppers and tourists. The works were carried out with the minimum of disruption and that is a credit to everyone involved, in particular the City Council, the contractor, the businesses and members of the public."
Dublin City Council has also announced that work will start on the repaving of the pedestrian section of Wicklow Street and of Johnson Court by the middle of April 2015.
The council expects to appoint a contractor shortly and anticipates works will be completed on the approx €0.5m project by late September 2015.
