Concerns Raised After Maintenance Work Forces Pedestrians To Walk On Busy Road In L'Derry

Concerns have been raised after pedestrians are being forced to walk on a busy road in L'Derry due to maintenance work being carried out by Transport NI and NI Water.

SDLP Derry Councillor Angela Dobbins said she has been "inundated" with calls from parents voicing "grave concerns" about the inability to walk past the works on the Culmore Road in the city.

She said: "The barriers placed on the footpaths have completely blocked the pedestrian thoroughfare and the only option is to cross the busy Culmore Road to the other side. The nearby schools are now reopened after the mid-term break and parents and students alike were notably worried.


"I have been given assurances from NI Water that the essential work to the fire hydrant mains is now complete and that the areas will have the barriers removed by the weekend. They have also apologised for the inconveniences caused and their intention was to accommodate the school closures.

"Transport NI who are also carrying out essential repair to the footpath on Culmore Road have also indicated that the work will be finished shortly and temporary signals are in place in an attempt to alleviate congestion."
