Around 2,000 NI Homes Lose Power Overnight

Around 2,000 homes across Northern Ireland were left without electricity this morning, NIE (Northern Ireland Electricity) has said, as a result of severe gales force winds that swept across the eastern counties during the night.

Gusts of 70mph, accompanied by heavy rain, damaged the network in counties Down and Antrim. In some instances, tree branches were broken and brought down poles and lines.

NIE engineers and emergency crews are responding to over 160 faults on the network.

Julia Carson, NIE Communications Manager, said: "We were in regular contact with the Met Office over the weekend and had mobilised NIE emergency crews, engineers and call handlers in preparation for any damage the severe weather may cause. Overnight we have restored supplies to over 5,000 customers and we will continue to restore customers as safely and quickly as possible.

"We would like to remind customers that if they do lose electricity supplies they should contact the NIE Customer Helpline on 03457 643 643 or report the fault online. You can also follow us on Twitter @NIElectricity."
