Call To Review Demolition License For Moore Street

Sandra McLellan, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Arts, Heritage, Tourism and Sport, has called on the new Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, to review a decision to grant Chartered Land a license to demolish Moore Street.

The demolition would be making way for a shopping centre.

Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday (16 July), Deputy McLellan said: "On behalf of Sinn Féin, I would like to welcome the Minister to her new role as Minster for Arts, Heritage & Gaeltacht Affairs and congratulations on your promotion.

"A priority of course should be the preservation of Moore Street. Sinn Féin fundamentally disagrees with the decision made by your predecessor, Jimmy Deenihan, in granting a license to Charted Land to demolish Moore Street and turn it into a shopping centre.

"I would encourage you to revisit that decision. I would encourage you to review the evidence presented to your department. The decision by this government to grant permission for the development of Moore Street to go ahead is tantamount to the obliteration of what the National Museum has called, 'the most important site in modern Irish history'."

She added: "I welcome the Minister's comments today that the government is committed to an interpretive centre for 14-17 Moore Street. Unfortunately, if Chartered Land has their way the rest of Moore Street and surrounding lanes of history will be demolished."
