DRD Opens 2014 Rural Borewells Scheme

DARD has opened the 2014 Rural Borewells Scheme.

The scheme, which is now in its third year, underlines the commitment by Minister O’Neill to addressing poverty and isolation issues in rural areas.

Minister O'Neill said: "Many of us take for granted the readily available access to mains drinking water at our homes without a second thought. However, those living in our rural communities and outside the scope of the public water network do not enjoy that same privilege. The Rural Borewells Scheme is making a significant difference to their lives by providing access to an alternative affordable quality water supply.

"My Department developed this highly innovative scheme jointly with the Department for Regional Development (DRD) who provides the scheme funding. This successful partnership approach highlights what can be achieved through government departments working together to accomplish a common objective. Over 60 borewells have been drilled since the scheme began in 2012.

"The application window closes on 30 May 2014 and as this may be the final year of the Scheme I would urge owners and landlords of domestic rural properties to contact my Department to check eligibility and request an application pack."

The grant scheme meets with DRD's existing policy objective of providing financial assistance via a Reasonable Cost Allowance.
