Tullycarnet Enhanced Nurture Unit Officially Opens

Minister for Social Development , Nelson McCausland has officially opened the Tullycarnet Enhanced Nurture Unit following a £40,000 upgrade funded by DSD.

The upgrade provides state of the art ICT equipment to facilitate children’s improvement with numeracy and literacy skills.

Minister McCausland said: "Tullycarnet Nurture Unit was one of the very first nurture units in Northern Ireland and has been a great success. Since its inception in 2000, many young children have been given intensive support to develop the required skills to overcome issues such as social inclusion and educational underachievement.


"In fact, the success of the Tullycarnet Nurture Unit was a contributing factor to the further investment by the NI Executive in February 2014 which provided additional funding of £3million. This created a further 20 nurture units at primary schools across Northern Ireland, bringing the total number of specialist facilities to 30."

The Nurture Unit aims to positively intervene to improve educational attainment in children who have been identified as being at risk of low achievement because of social and emotional problems. It provides a nurturing environment where children can develop and be enabled to access the curriculum and participate fully in school life.
