Fine Gael Meath West TD, Ray Butler, has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn TD, that Trim will be the location for one of four new Educate Together primary schools expected to open this September.
It comes after a survey was carried out in Trim asking parents on their preferred school patronage.
"It's very positive news that a new Educate Together school is to be opened in Trim to help cater for the town’s diverse population. Minister Quinn has recognised the need to expand the patronage options for parents and their children when it comes to choosing primary schools.
"Parents in Trim took part in a pilot survey back in October 2012, to gauge the need for a wider school choice for parents. The Educate Together model came out as the top choice of alternative patron in Trim and in the four other towns included in the pilot survey.
"Parents were given a voice through the survey process to express a preference for the types of schools they want to send their children to. While many are happy with the schools already available in their area, there is a clear demand from others for greater choice.
"I understand that a permanent building has not yet been secured for the Educate Together school in Trim, but the Minister has given the go-ahead for the school to progress in temporary start-up accommodation. The Department of Education is holding discussions with the main Catholic patrons in Trim to identify and secure permanent accommodation. The Minister has described this engagement as open and generous."
