Meetings On Mortgage Distress To Be Held In North Dublin

Sinn Féin Dublin EU Candidate Lynn Boylan will host a series of major public meetings on debt crisis and mortgage distress across north Dublin with the first to be held in Swords on Tuesday night.

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD will be the guest speaker.

Speaking ahead of the event Lynn Boylan said: "One in four mortgages are in distress with 180,000 households struggling to make their monthly mortgage repayments. Recent data shows that many of these households have at least one person in full time employment but still cannot make ends meet.

"There is no doubt that mortgage debt crisis is Fianna Fáil’s legacy but despite all the pre-election promises the current government has failed to put in place sustainable solutions for families experiencing mortgage distress.

"Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald will join me next week to outline the party’s alternative solutions to the mortgage crisis.

"Sinn Féin has called for a F.A.I.R. approach to dealing with mortgage distress – one that puts the family home first, adjudicates on an independent basis and brings about resolutions that can involve write-downs among other options on a case by case basis.

"Concern remains for not only IBRC mortgage holders but for those with Bank of Scotland mortgages as the company also intends to sell off its loan book to unregulated vulture funds. Government needs to set out exactly how it intends to protect the rights of these mortgage holders."
