Google To Build New Data Centre

Google could be about to invest €150m in a new data centre in west Dublin, according to a report by the Sunday Independent.

It has been claimed that the technology firm is to submit planning application for the project today (17 February).

If approved, the scheme could create up to 300 jobs during the construction phase, plus 60 new full-time jobs once the centre is operational.

A spokesperson for Google is quoted by the publication as saying: "The data centre that we built in Dublin in 2012 has worked well for us and created around 30 full-time jobs.


"We're now considering whether to expand our operations – and so we're submitting a planning application.

"This will ensure that we've taken into account local opinion and rules, if we do decide to build in the future."

In September 2013, Google opened its first data centre in Ireland, at a cost of €75m. It is understood the new facility would be twice this size and located on land beside Nangor Road in the city.

Just last month, the company bought an office at Grand Mill Quay from Nama for €65m, the fourth in its "Silicon Docks" cluster in Barrow Street. It has also previously spent millions of euros on three significant office buildings – the Alto Veltro, Gasworks House and Gordon House.
