Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis has rubbished claims by the Minister for Housing that rising homelessness will be dealt with through NAMA housing.
He made his comment following a claim by the Minister in response to a report showing huge increases in homelessness under her government that NAMA would deliver 450 homes for people in long term homelessness.
Deputy Ellis said: "The Minister must stop pretending NAMA homes will solve all the failures of her government in relation to housing. As of the summer 2013 NAMA had not even delivered 450 homes at all never mind that many dedicated specifically to deal with homelessness.
"Focus Ireland believe there are around 5000 people experiencing homelessness in the state but give regional experience this is likely conservative. Dublin Regional Homeless Executive reports a shocking 200% increase in rough sleeping in the last year.
"These people are out there on the cold streets right now due to government cuts from housing, social welfare, rent supplement and other essential support services.
"NAMA should and is very slowly providing housing but it is not the solution to rising housing need. This government has again cut from housing as they have done year on year which is making it harder and harder for people to get decent affordable and secure accommodation.
" Government policy has led to rising rents, extreme housing shortage and the re-emergence of the slum landlord."
