An Bórd Pleanala Refuses Permission For Siting At Garden Of Remembrance

Sinn Féin Dublin City Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha has welcomed the decision of An Bórd Pleanala to refuse permission for the siting at the Garden of Remembrance of a memorial to victims of institutional abuse.

Councillor Mac Donncha, who is a member of the City Council's Commemorations Committee, said: "This proposal should never have seen the light of day in the first place. It was totally ill-conceived and inappropriate.


"The victims of institutional abuse and those who died for Irish freedom deserve separate and distinct memorials in our capital city. Questions must be asked of the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn, from whose Department this proposal emanated. Instead of pursuing this plan the Government should have focussed on providing an appropriate memorial for abuse victims in a distinct location.

"The Garden of Remembrance is a unique historic site and must be central to the planned enhancement of Parnell Square, including the location of the new Central Library there."
